Understanding the marketing mix helps businesses decide what to sell, how much to charge, where to sell it, and how to tell everyone about it. What Is This? (The Simple Version)

The marketing mix is like a chef's recipe for success when selling something. Just as a chef needs to pick the right ingredients and cook them perfectly to make a delicious meal, a business needs to get its marketing 'ingredients' just right to attract customers.

These ingredients are often called the 4 Ps:

For businesses that offer services (like a hairdresser, a tutor, or a restaurant), there are 3 extra Ps to consider, making it the 7 Ps:

  • People: Who provides the service? Are they friendly, helpful, and skilled? Good staff can make a huge difference to a customer's experience.
  • Process: How is the service delivered? Is it quick, easy, and efficient? Think about how you book a doctor's appointment or order food online.
  • Physical Evidence: What are the clues that show the service is good? For a restaurant, it might be the clean tables and nice decor. For a tutor, it could be a comfortable study room or good learning materials. It's anything you can see or touch that gives you confidence in the service.

Let's imagine a popular ice cream shop called 'Cool Scoops' that sells delicious ice cream. They use the marketing mix every day!

4 Ps for Cool Scoops:

  • Product: Their ice cream is super creamy, comes in exciting flavours like 'Unicorn Sparkle' and 'Dinosaur Crunch', and they also sell milkshakes and sundaes. They even have vegan options!
  • Price: A single scoop costs $3, a double is $5. They also have a 'buy two get one free' deal on Tuesdays to attract more customers.
  • Place: You can buy their ice cream at their bright, colourful shop in the town centre. They also have a small cart that goes to local parks and festivals, and you can order tubs for home delivery through an app.

  • People: The staff are always smiling, friendly, and quick to serve. They remember regular customers' favourite orders and are happy to let you try samples.
  • Process: Ordering is easy – you queue up, choose your flavour, pay, and get your ice cream quickly. For online orders, the app is simple to use, and delivery is usually within 30 minutes.
  • Physical Evidence: The shop is clean, brightly lit, and smells amazing! They have comfy seating, fun decorations, and the ice cream freezers are sparkling clean. You can see the fresh ingredients they use.
